EXTRA VINYL (KNOWN AS "HOW ACE ARE REMIXES") EXPLAINED

Alrighty then, well it's like this you see.........After "A"'s first album "How Ace Are Buildings" had been released, it got re-issued on 12" with an extra vinyl. This extra vinyl contains the hardest to get rare "A" tracks, as well as a hell of a lot of tomfoolery to boot! For fans like me, it is the last "A" release to bother getting as I already have the first album on CD (obviously!) but  I don't really want to shell out £15 on the vinyl. However, I was lucky to have a friend who had a copy of this vinyl, which I have listened to and can describe to you, to help decide whether it is worth buying!

Track listing is as follows: (it starts on side "c" cos A & B are for the album!)

c 1)
Turn it down     2.20   (Same as b-side on I Love Lake Tahoe CD2)

Introduction at beginning of vinyl by Neato which doesn't make too much sense to me; end of track finished presumably by the Perry's Gran telling a well used bad joke!

c 2) No.1 (Happy Valley Ranch Remix)   4.43     (Same as b-side on No.1 CD2 Re-issue)

Although this track is the same as on the No.1 CD single, it is strangely cut short at the end by about 1.5 minutes. However, the silly little noise that riddled the b-sides on the No.1 re-issue are not present on this version. In another words: at the beginning of the track the answerphone message by Neato does not get interrupted at the "it would be rad" bit; and during the track at the "getting late, ohhhh, almost most time to turn in" bit!

c 3) Alright (In a Castle)   3.56

This is different to the normal studio version on the No.1 CD1 Re-issue, and appears to be recorded live in a studio, in a castle! I hasten to add that even though the vinyl states that the tracks are "LIVE", they are NOT in the true sense of at a gig; but more so in front of band crew members in a studio. All of the other tracks on the vinyl seem to be taken from the same session, which is much rawer and, well, live! Song ends off into a fadeout as a weird jazz jam; "A" interview Giles, and (accidentally on purpose) spit on him in the process; track ends with must be Jason Perry DJ-ing at a Christmas party. JP's commentary is quite amusing, as he introduces what it eventually is "Bad Idea" as "Ladies & Gentlemen we have a complaint, so we're gonna play some sweet soul music"! This is only achieved however, after JP manages (purposely) to get the wrong track (four times) with a record that was least expected. (not!)

d 4) Bad Idea  (In a Castle)   2.45

Different to the album version, fantastic lyric change from  "Number crunching, bunjie jumping, paying taxes   (bad idea!)" to "Number crushing, bunjie jumping, Chumbawumba (bad idea!)". Track ends with another answerphone message from Dan obviously quite irate that JP isn't answering! Very amusing. Has to be heard !

d 5) Sing-a-long (Post Team Audit Mix)   4.29      (Same as b-side on Sing-a-long CD1)

EXACTLY the same as on the Sing-a-long CD single. Track ends with appears to be "A" arguing - what the hell "A for D" is, is beyond me!

d 6) Five in the Morning (DJ Mental Visuals Remix)        4.00

WEIRD remix of five in the morning. Never previously released. Not remixed by "A", unlike all the other remixes. This version is hardly recognisable as the original which is good, but sounds like the Prodigy which is......not so good. Track is interrupted a couple of  times. Firstly  someone in "A" relieving themselves in (presumably) a public place, as there is much hilarity. Track carries on briefly, and then is interrupted by funny banjo/folk/instrumental type thingy, which is followed on by interviewing presumably an American roadie type blokie. Funny banjo/folk/instrumental type thingy carries on before continuing back into the remix which ACTUALLY finishes. Track ends with strange subliminal fast/backwards message which when reversed and slower down reads this: (trust me it is....I've actually gone though the trouble of deciphering it!)

"Kid  - if we were a real rock band we have a message right here saying: Kill her, kill, kill, kill yourself, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, but obviously we not, so we're not gonna, so, I mean you can kill yourself if you really want to, but we're not not really responsible". End of message repeats on "A good sign plate"?????? Hear it !

d 1) Foghorn (In a Castle)    4.37

Track starts with weird noises, followed by some radio interview - god knows what "bottle rock" is! Foghorn is preceded by a typical live introduction to "A" as on their live CD, and yet again is a different version to what is found on the album it is off. Track ends with a "hoyah"????? and baby crying (as you do).

d 2) Barnyard   1.12

Now this IS strange. Instrumental track, never previously released. Basically sounds like drum bit from Aerosmith & Run DMC's version of "Walk this Way" (kindof), with farm animal noises in the background, and I LOVE IT because it is so stupid! Should really be called "FARMyard" I reckon. Track ends with "A" trying to grab JP's legs from him for some reason!

d 3) House (AKA - A Demolished House)      (House Under The Ground Remix)    5.35

Exactly the same track as released on Foghorn and  House Under The Ground CD singles. Track ends with more mucking about with JP - check out his fantastic battle cry. Hear it !

d 4) Call Him Yin (AKA - Callhimin)      2.29

Same as b-side released on Sing-a-long CD 1 single, but not as good. It starts part of the way in from the CD version - without the fade-in, and cuts short at the end. As the CD version is over 5 minutes long, this version is considerably shorter!

d 5) Cheeky Monkey (In a Castle)   3.29

Starts with fantastic "oh you cheeky monkey" introduction - voice unknown. Not much else to say about this one really. Song as with funny slow down thing. Track ends with what must be someone in "A" singing along to a what could be a Beatles song. Only thing is that the person singing sounds like a chipmunk on Helium!

d 6) Fistral (Major Treat Mix) 3.32

Yeahhhhh! This IS good. Previously unreleased track, NOT a remix as you might think it is. What it actually is can be best described as "Fistral - Punk version", because that is what it sounds like! It starts off VERY misleadingly (done purposely of course) with JP crooning the beginning lyrics of Fistral. Just as it gets VERY slushy there is  screaming and gun shots, before the song launches itself into light speed! It is entirely "A" re-doing the song, and NO dance bits in it (which is good) and is what Fistral WOULD have sounded like if "A" had decided to do it in their normal style instead of the mellow version! Track ends with another snippet from  a different radio interview from  before. Question sent in by email for "A" by a girl called "Kate Windybank", hahahahahahahahahahaha! (ahem)

d 7) Out of Tune (In a Castle)    4.42

Same as b-side on Sing-a-long CD 1, although the fade out is cut off for the final "A" antics at the end. End of track ends with VERY weird mix of noises, sped up tunes and general mucking about with keyboards, before finishing with last 46 seconds of Five In The Morning live. Live recording is of exceptional BAD quality, and is the ending of what must have been an ace "A" gig.

Conclusion

I would must certainly suggest buying this vinyl if you can afford it because it contains previously unreleased tracks and a hell of a lot of "A" tomfoolery in the process. For those who can't spare the money give me an email, and I'll try to help if I can!
